Zespół powstał w 1980 roku w Leeds, a jego głównym przedstawicielem i liderem jest Andrew Eldritch. Wzniosła i pełna zadumy ballada pt. 1959 pochodzi z albumu Floodland, wydanego przez grupę w roku 1987. Przez krytyków muzycznych płyta została uznana za klasyczny album gotycki.
